The study of ancient Greek housing has been largely ignored when sites in Greece have been excavated, emphasis falling instead more on large public buildings or temples. Even when studies of housing have been carried out the perspectives offered have been largely functional ones which have given little attention to the domestic social context of the buildings. This chapter illustrates the value of viewing ancient housing in this latter context and compares houses from mainland Greece with those from southern Italy and Sicily, exploring whether there really are underlying patterns of domestic spatial organisation visible and how these change through time.
